Young people often see death as an abstract thing. The idea that someone you care about even someone who makes you angry can just not be there one day is beyond comprehension. The thought that your nagging mom, your grouchy dad, your bitchy little sister could be gone in an instant doesn’t seem real. How can this be? How can a person be in your life and then in an instant be gone forever?
Now, I am not being morbid. This is real and it is going to happen to you. You can be ready or you can bury your head in the sand but it isn’t going to change a damn thing. There are lessons to be learned. Lessons in the light of the spirit which can help you love, grow, heal and rebuild the bridges you have burnt.
This is what is meant by living for today. When one understands the finality and inevitability of the death of family members then suddenly that argument over whose turn it is to do the dishes and those dark resentments over past insult seem petty and small. This is the gift that we receive when we realize and accept the inevitability of change and death.
Kiss your mom, give dad a hug. Tell them you love them. The day will come when you will not be able to do this and that day could be tomorrow. So, love them in the now. It’s all we have.
